Kali, Escrima, Arnis
Kali (and other Filipino Martial Arts) is an art that has been most famously perpetuated by Bruce Lee’s training partner and protege, Dan Inosanto. It is from Kali, along with Escrima and Arnis, that the practitioner learns the art of fighting with sticks, knives, bats, swords and even the staff. Modern configurations of these weapons can be used in a variety of street situations. Theories and focus include striking with and without a weapon, disarming, body mechanics, footwork, zoning/angles, and trapping.
Our Filipino Martial Arts class incorporates elements from both Western and Eastern Martial Arts. The most popular forms of which are known as Eskrima, Arnis, and Kali. The Filipino Martial Arts, perpetuated by Guro Dan Inosanto and his students, is generally known as Inosanto/LaCoste Kali or JKD/Kali Blend. Practitioners of Inosanto/LaCoste Kali prefer not to attach limiting labels or names to their expression of Filipino martial arts. In that spirit, we incorporate practical methods from Filipino Kali, Eskrima, Indonesian Silat, and others.
Filipino martial arts are combat arts defined as “ancient and newer fighting methods devised in the Philippines. It incorporates elements from both Western and Eastern Martial Arts, the most popular forms of which are known as Arnis, Eskrima and Kali. The intrinsic need for self-preservation was the genesis of these systems. “-Wikipedia
Kali and the Filipino Martial Arts are extremely effective and battle-tested. The bulk of training in this art will be with weapons such as the stick and knife. We also teach various empty hand systems that are taken from this dynamic and functional art. The training methods of the Filipino Martial Arts will increase your empty hand skills by supercharging such attributes as coordination, perception, and awareness. One of the main goals of training in this system is to give you the ability to pick up everyday objects and use them to your advantage.
We take a practical and realistic approach to our Filipino Martial Arts training. Weapons are force amplifiers that are a reality of life. This is why our focus is not on weapon disarms or extravagant techniques, but instead they are the basics of evading, neutralizing and escaping a bad situation.
Any time you train yourself to counter violence with a weapon of some kind, you must also learn how to responsibly handle that weapon in a moral, ethical and legal manner. We provide you with a range of techniques with each type of weapon and the defensive tactics that will help you in a street-dependable, AND court-defendable way.
